Here at Canopy Building Services, we spend a lot of time working alongside other local businesses in Delaware County. Over the years, you get a feel for which companies are just passing through and which ones have genuinely put down roots. Bug Away Exterminating and Termite Control Co. is firmly in the second category, and we think more people in our community should know their story.
Ken, the owner and operator of Bug Away, has been serving Delaware County since 1995. But his roots in the pest control industry go back even further, to March of 1987, when he took his first job with a small family-owned company in Ridley Park.
He tried the corporate route once, landed at Terminix, and lasted about six months before realizing that the big-company model simply wasn’t for him. What he wanted was something personal, something built on real relationships. That instinct eventually led him to start Bug Away, and nearly three decades later, that same instinct is what still sets him apart.
A Name You Know, a Face You Recognize

One of the things we most appreciate about Ken is that he still has residential clients he has been serving for thirty years. Some of those clients live in the very neighborhoods where he grew up. That kind of continuity is rare in any service industry, and it doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because Ken shows up, tells the truth, and treats people with respect.
When Ken talks about his approach to clients, he says he treats every person the way he would want to be treated in a service situation. That means moving furniture, clearing closets, doing the work completely, and then putting everything back exactly as he found it. He also makes a point of telling clients the honest truth rather than what they want to hear. As he puts it, pest control is about prevention and management, not magic. He will not promise that you will never see another bug or mouse. What he will promise is that he will do everything in his power to keep them out, and that if he cannot figure something out on the spot, he will research it until he can.
His three words for the business say a lot: professionalism, integrity, and honesty. The way he defines integrity is worth repeating. It is doing the right thing even when no one is watching. When Bug Away uses a lockbox to access a property, Ken still expects a fully detailed invoice of what was found, what was done, and what follow-up is needed. No shortcuts, no cutting corners just because the homeowner is not there to check.
Going Above and Beyond for Seniors
Something Ken does not advertise loudly, but that we think deserves to be recognized, is his standing policy for senior citizens. He gives them a discount without being asked, and he gives them extra time and attention during every visit. He listens.
He sits with them a little longer if they need it. He is not doing this because it boosts his bottom line. He does it because, in his words, it is simply the right thing to do. In a world where service businesses are often rushing from job to job, that kind of quiet generosity speaks volumes.
Deep Roots in the Local Business Community
Ken’s ties to Delaware County extend well beyond his pest control route. Over the years, his most loyal clients, many of them private real estate investors, brought him into their world and helped him learn how to purchase properties through estate auctions, short sales, and foreclosures. Those investors had his back, and he had theirs. That mutual loyalty helped shape Bug Away into what it is today, a business that is genuinely woven into the fabric of the local real estate and property management community.
His team reflects the same values. Anthony, a licensed pest control technician in categories 11 and 12, has been working alongside Ken for about eight years and is on a path to eventually merge with the business. Ryan, a more recent addition, came to Ken through a family connection and had no prior pest control experience. Ken saw that as an advantage. He trained Ryan himself, and by all accounts Ryan has taken to the work with exactly the kind of curiosity and commitment Ken was looking for.
